Natural-Looking Inlays and Onlays Can Strengthen and Repair Your Teeth

An illustrated example of inlays and onlaysIf a significant portion of the chewing area your molar is damaged, but does not require a dental crown, an inlay or onlay can be used to restore and strengthen the tooth. Dr. Joe Jeppson provides dental inlays and onlays at his Provo, UT, practice to repair your teeth when fillings are not adequate. At Jeppson Dental, we use advanced CEREC technology to provide a durable, long-lasting restoration in a single appointment. Made from porcelain, your inlay or onlay can be created to blend with the natural shape, size, and aesthetics of your smile.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Both inlays and onlays can help strengthen and restore the natural look and structural integrity of a tooth that has been damaged by decay. Inlays and onlays also provide an excellent solution for replacing old, silver amalgam fillings.

An inlay is designed to cover the area in between the cusps, or the chewing surfaces of your teeth. When the damage extends to one or more of the cusps or down the side of the tooth, an onlay can be applied. Typically, inlays and onlays are made from materials such as gold, composite resin, or porcelain. At Jeppson Dental, we use CEREC technology to create customized porcelain inlays and onlays in a single office visit.

During a consultation, Dr. Jeppson will first take any necessary digital x-rays to determine the extent of damage. Once the decay has been located, he can administer a local anesthetic for optimal comfort. After removing all damaged tissue, Dr. Jeppson will prepare your tooth to provide a stable foundation for your restoration. When your tooth is ready, he will take digital impressions for your customized restoration to be fabricated. Using these scans, Dr. Jeppson will design your custom inlay or onlay, which can be carved from a solid piece of porcelain in our in-office milling unit.

Having a customized porcelain inlay or onlay placed can help protect your tooth from further decay. It can also prevent cavities, fractures, tooth loss, as well as additional costly treatments and procedures.

In most cases, your restoration can be created in less than an hour, eliminating the need for a temporary restoration and second office visit. Once completed, Dr. Jeppson will place the inlay or onlay. He will ensure that your bite has not been affected before firmly securing your restoration in place.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

A customized porcelain inlay or onlay can help rebuild damaged teeth and protect your smile from further decay. It can also prevent cavities, fractures, and tooth loss, as well as additional costly restorative treatments and procedures. Compared to metal, our advanced porcelain restorations provide many other benefits, including:

  • Natural-looking aesthetics
  • Non-metal materials that require less removal of healthy tooth structure
  • Strong, durable restorations
  • Long-lasting results
  • Preserved and strengthened teeth
