Do you want top-notch oral health and a beautiful smile? If so, you need to keep up on oral hygiene. You not only need to keep up on oral hygiene, but you also need to use the right tools while cleaning your smile. If you use the wrong tools, you won’t properly clean your teeth and gums and you may even harm your smile. So, our dentist, Dr. Joe Jeppson, encourages you to use the right oral hygiene tools. Those tools are:

-A soft-bristled toothbrush: A soft-bristled toothbrush cleans the teeth and cares for the gums. A hard-bristled toothbrush can wear down the tooth enamel and irritate the gums, making them pull away from the teeth.

-Fluoride toothpaste: Fluoride can strengthen your tooth enamel and make it a tough shell. This helps your teeth fight decay. So, make sure your toothpaste contains fluoride.

-Easy-to-use dental floss: Using floss that is easy to maneuver can help reduce your chances of damaging your gums as you clean between your teeth. This is because you won’t need to force the floss into place or vigorously clean the smile.

-Antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash: Antibacterial mouthwash kills the bacteria in your mouth, like plaque, which can help you prevent gingivitis (the first stage of gum disease). Fluoride mouthwash can strengthen the tooth enamel and help you prevent cavities.

Are you aware of risks associated with contamination? Contamination refers to the presence of bacteria being inserted into your mouth due to unhealthy habits. This can include cleaning habits, eating habits, or even lifestyle habits. Thus, always make sure the proper precautions are taken for cleaning any tools you may be using and cleaning your mouth out as necessary as well.

If you own or ever use a mouthguard, it is important to make sure you take care of it as needed. If it ever becomes dirty or if you drop it, always rinse it off with cool, soapy water and then with plain water to ensure it is clean enough to insert it back into your mouth. Sanitizing products before inserting them back into your mouth can prove to be highly effective. This should also occur if you have an infant and need to place a pacifier back into their mouth. Furthermore, if you have dentures, always soak them in a denture-cleaning solution so that they are free of any bacteria and other contaminants that can collect on them.

With your cleaning utensils, it is important to make sure you’re always taking the necessary steps to keep them clean. This includes making sure your brush is always in a safe location when not in use. Your toothbrush should never be stored with other toothbrushes, and you should never let anyone else use your toothbrush. To prevent cross-contamination, store it upright in an aired-out location. Furthermore, never use the same strand of dental floss more than once. When flossing with thread, never use the same section of the thread between more than one tooth, cross-contamination can occur.
