Minimal-discomfort Root Canal Therapy Can Save Infected Teeth
When root canal procedures are performed by a highly-experienced dentist such as Dr. Joe Jeppson, you can relax, knowing you are in good hands. At Jeppson Dental, we use advanced techniques and technology to minimize pain and discomfort during root canal therapy at our Provo, UT, office. Root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, can often save severely damaged teeth. During treatment, Dr. Jeppson will eliminate bacteria and infected tissue , and place a custom-made dental crown to restore the aesthetics and functionality of your smile.
Do You Need a Root Canal?
In most cases, Dr. Jeppson will recommend root canal therapy to treat an infected tooth. Infection develops when bacteria penetrates to the soft tissues inside of your tooth. A toothache is the most common symptom of a dental infection, though discomfort can take several different forms. Pain may be isolated, or it may cause radiating pressure and discomfort across your face. Your toothache may also worsen in response to chewing or to temperature changes. Other symptoms of dental infection can include:
- Gum abscesses
- Chronic bad breath
- Internal tooth discoloration
- Changes in color of gums
- Bitter taste in your mouth
In some cases, Dr. Jeppson may also recommend root canal therapy to treat a cracked tooth. He will carefully evaluate your tooth and overall health needs to determine the most appropriate restorative treatment for you.
What to Expect during Root Canal Therapy
Before your procedure, Dr. Jeppson will carefully numb your tooth and nearby gums. Then he will create a tiny opening in the top or back of your tooth. Through this access point, he can remove bacteria and infected tissue. He will also reshape your root canals and the inside of your teeth to prevent future infection. When your tooth is free of decay, Dr. Jeppson will fill it with gutta-percha, a soft rubber-like compound. He will also reshape your tooth in preparation for a dental crown.
Often, we can provide same-day crowns using our advanced CEREC® technology. With CEREC®, Dr. Jeppson will take digital impressions of your tooth. These computerized molds will upload to an in-office milling machine, which will produce your crown in less than an hour. Dr. Jeppson can then attach your restoration during that same dental appointment. If needed, we can also provide crowns made at a trusted dental lab.
With root canal therapy, Dr. Jeppson can often restore your smile and save your tooth in one minimal-discomfort appointment.
Benefits of Root Canal Therapy
If you have developed a dental infection, root canal therapy is typically the only way to save your tooth. Without proper care, bacteria can eventually destroy your entire tooth, and you would require extraction and more extensive restorative care. Endodontic treatment can also prevent the discomfort that comes with worsening infection. In addition, untreated dental infection can have devastating effects for your oral and overall health. Without treatment, bacteria can spread to your gums, your jawbone, and your other teeth. You could experience tooth loss, jaw recession, or even a serious bone infection. Fortunately, however, Dr. Jeppson can restore your smile and save your tooth in one minimal-discomfort appointment.
